My name is Rebecca Ann Jordan. I am a recent college graduate trying to find my place in the world. Until I do, it pleases me to begin a blog. A real blog. (If you would like to purview my self-indulgent non-functioning quasi-blog, go here.)
I am first and foremost a writer. I write historical/fantasy/science fiction, poetry, and the occasional cover letter (and now blogs!). I have published four poems and am working on editing a full-length novel which will be sent out to agents soon. I’m currently a team member over at DIYMFA, which is an excellent resource for writers. Writing and my writing community are extremely important to me. If you have to ask why, then you’re obviously in the wrong place and you should leave.
No, no. That was a joke. Please don’t leave. I need as many subscribers as I can get….
About the Site
At this point I feel capable of posting twice a week. Sometime early on in the week (Look for my first post on Tuesday, July 10!) I will post my “How Not to Write” series, which will not be for the faint of heart. Snide, self-deprecating humor is the only kind of humor I can do well. So whether you’re a writer or not, you’ll want to read it. Or not. I’m not your boss, you’re going to do what you want to do. (See what I did there? That’s called passive-aggressive reverse psychology. I learned it from my mother.)
The second post of the week (likely a Friday) you can look forward to Smells Like Fiction. I hear a lot of people preface their conversations with me with, “You’re a writer! This would make a really great story.” They’re usually not aware that I am disinterested in the mundane or the heart-warming. But once in a while they will actually tell me something quite fascinating. These gems should not go unpolished. In Smells Like Fiction I’ll blog about these true tales which are sometimes so bizarre they seem like they must be fiction. I’m interested in stories past and present alike, from near or far, weird facts, wild stories and wonderful truths. If you have any leads on good ideas please send them to me.
More About Me
Believe it or not, I do more than just write. I love cultural and world dance, and have studied Belly Dance, Irish, African, and Cuban dancing. I’ve even been known to cut the occasional Ballroom rug. Much of my fantasy writing comes from these cultures. Movement and music are cultural essentials and make for the starting points of creating rich and diverse fictional societies.
I am also a wicked costumer. I loved sewing when Grandma Ann taught me back in middle school, and have been fearlessly defying pattern instructions ever since. Medieval and Renaissance costume are my forte and I once had high hopes of starting my own costuming business (which I fondly called Step in Tyme, and which I still have customized clothing tags for) based around my excellent cloak creation. Now I sew for fun, design my own patterns, and have recently gotten involved in natural dyeing and a method called stitch-resist, which in layman’s terms means tie-dye. Clothing and cloth are also essentially cultural. Before writing a character I usually design their clothes first. It says much about their personality and their culture. Don’t be surprised if I lean a little heavily on the clothing-related posts.
I like a good deal more things, such as horses, avocados, beaches, antiques… but the list could go on forever, and I’m sure this About page has gone on long enough.
